Welcome to Theory Cards

A new home for the collectible-card hobby - the grails, the market and the know-how, all in one place.

Welcome to Theory Cards - a new publication for everyone who loves collectible cards, whether you have been chasing grails for decades or you have just pulled your first holo.

What we cover

We write about the whole hobby: Pokémon, sports cards, Magic: The Gathering and the wider TCG world. That means three kinds of content, side by side:

  • Ranked listicles of the most valuable and most iconic cards - the grails, the record sales, the cards that define each hobby.
  • Grading and authentication guides - how PSA, BGS and CGC work, how to spot a fake, and when a slab is actually worth the fee.
  • Level-headed market analysis - what the headline sales really mean, and where the market is and isn’t heading.

Our promise

Collecting is full of hype, and hype is where people lose money. So we make a simple promise: clear, honest writing that cites its sources and never invents a price. When we quote a sale, it is a real, documented sale. When we don’t have a number, we won’t make one up.

Where to start

If you want a sense of what we do, start with the record books. The most expensive trading card ever sold is the Pikachu Illustrator, which changed hands for $16,492,000 in February 2026 - a single card that captures everything this hobby is about: scarcity, condition and story.

Have a look around, and welcome to the collection.
