Theory Cards "a victim of their own success"
The producers of the hugely popular Theory.org.uk Trading Cards have announced the closure of the series after twelve cards.
"It was fun while it lasted," noted series editor David Gauntlett, "but we felt we should stop on a 'high'. Twelve cards was a good number."
Gauntlett explained that he wanted to devote more time to the development of exciting new areas on the Theory.org.uk website.
The word-of-mouth success of the series showed once again that communities of communication develop around websites. In other words, 'virtual communities' exist not just in internet chatrooms or mailing lists, but in a less obvious way around innumerable 'home-made' websites. More on this appears in the new book Web.Studies (see details).
